“Too Much Is Not Enough” is Omar And
The Howlers’ second album release of 2012 and continues Kent “Omar” Dykes
exploration of the blues of Jimmy Reed, after 2007’s “On The Jimmy Reed Highway”
– a collaboration with Jimmie Vaughan. Sadly, these dozen tracks include
the final recordings of harmonica-man Gary Primich.
It’s a powerful, rootsy set, with the band doing full
justice to songs both written, and made famous, by Reed. Dykes is on top vocal
form, with his Wolf-like growl bringing plenty of grit to the proceedings, and
the guitar / harp interplay is a joy to behold. It’s a set you’ll want to sink
into rather than cherry-pick individual numbers, though it would seem almost
churlish not to mention the loose groove of opener “Too Much”, Primich’s blowing
on “Going To New York” and the spine-tingling slide guitar contributions of
Gary Clark Jr. on final track “You Don’t Have To Go”.
