Lewes music festival in re-entry U-turn

Visitors to a music festival in East Sussex are to be allowed to leave and re-enter the site after local traders persuaded organisers to review plans.

About 25,000 people are expected to attend the two-day Gentleman of the Road event in Lewes in July, headlined by Brit award winners Mumford & Sons.

Organiser Everybody's said the revision followed "exhaustive discussions".

Shops, pubs and restaurants had campaigned for the change amid fears they would lose out on custom.

'Great coup'

They had the backing of Lewes MP Norman Baker, who called on the district council to do "all it could" to influence the organisers to overturn their no re-entry policy, arguing it would also have a "disproportionate effect" on residents.

"It is brilliant news that probably the biggest band in the world right now has chosen to come to Lewes," the Liberal Democrat MP said.

"Mumford & Sons are a great coup for the town This will help our local businesses get the most of the event."

The festival on 19 and 20 July is one of only four UK appearances by Mumford & Sons this year.
